Four-Links – F1 freaks, rally MG rescued, 112-year-old trophy resurfaces, headlamp design

* Formula 1, as we understand it, is supposed to be about experimentation and pushing the bounds of automotive technology in an effort to advance the sport, so even though the half-dozen Formula 1 “freaks” that Motorpunk recently selected might not have seen their innovations go on to become standard practice, they should be celebrated as examples of the sport’s true nature.

* One would figure with ex-competition cars being so highly prized these days that an MGB built to run the London-to-Sydney wouldn’t have wound its way to a junkyard, as Jean Denton’s did. According to JustBritish.com, however, the MG Car Club not only located the B, but has pulled it from the junkyard and plans to restore it.

* Another piece of racing history to recently return to the spotlight was the 1903 Empire City Race trophy, which George Papillion won in 1903, and which, as we read this past week at The Old Motor, recently came up for sale in Oklahoma and now resides back on the East Coast.

* Car Design News this week ran an article by Peter Stevens looking at the particular need for headlamps and how they’ve changed over the decades.

* Finally, Ron van der Ende specializes in wall-mount sculptures of cars and other subjects “that have once inspired enthusiasm but that we have come to look upon with indifference,” using only salvaged pieces of wood. (via)
